Join us at the Newark Earthworks, one location of the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks World Heritage Site! The Newark Earthworks is a sacred ceremonial site constructed by American Indian groups 2,000 years ago during the Hopewell Cultural Period. This monument consists of two earthworks, the Great Circle and the Octagon which are fully preserved and protected. Today the monument is managed and interpreted by the Ohio History Connection in collaboration with indigenous tribes that have ancestral ties to the land that is now Ohio. Come explore the history of the Newark Earthworks with us!
Take a tour of this magnificent site focusing on the human genius that went into creating the Newark Earthworks and the other Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks. Try your hand at creating a perfect circle and constructing a wall with intention and cooperation. Explore objects that made up the day-to-day life of American Indians during the Hopewell Cultural Period. Feel the materials that we carried by human hands from across North America to create sacred objects. Chat with archaeologists, site managers, and other staff that are integral to learning more about the history of these special sites and sharing them with the public! Last but not least, swing by the visitor center and museum to snag a memento of your time at the Newark Earthworks.
Access to the site and available programming is FREE with the purchase of a Virtual + In-Person registration (badge required for entry). Bus transportation will be available for a fee of $10/person. Attendees are welcome to drive themselves and park at the site. RSVP for the retreat and let us know how you plan to get there during registration. Bus(es) will depart the hotel by 9:30 a.m. and return to the hotel approximately 12:30 p.m.
Please note that Newark Earthworks is primarily an outdoor site, please dress for the weather, wear comfortable shoes, and expect that outdoor activities may be affected by severe weather.
